Hello ABC!
I hope the summer is treating you all well, and that you are
enjoying the lazy, hazy days.
Here at the ABC office we're hard at work on lots
of different projects, including the catalog, plans for 2008 BEA in L.A.,
and a retooling of both the ABC website, and the newsletter schedule.
Not only
that but we've added new members-34 of them to be exact! And that doesn't
include the 24 trial memberships we gathered at BEA. ABC is on the move.
On a personal note, I want to take this moment to thank all
of your for your patience and good wishes since the birth of Lola Faye. The arrival
of a new baby has brought with it many changes, and I appreciate all of your
support while we are on our new baby learning curve. Many of you have raised
children while running your businesses, so I know you appreciate the juggling.
Lola
is growing by leaps and bounds, and although it has its challenges, it's also
really fun!
There's much news below, so I won't keep you!
Warm regards,
 -Kristen

Dearest Magical Independent Booksellers,
Here it is the middle of August and summer is almost over
and what a summer it's been!
I just want
to congratulate all of you on your Muggle Magic, and how we as a passionate,
knowledgeable, creative, supportive and collaborative group transformed the 7th
and last Harry potter release from what many of us experienced with the 6th. The tone and spirit of the listserv was
totally different this time. It all goes
back to "Where the Magic Began" and "Where would Harry Shop?" and that's with
us.
We are the passionate big mouths of this industry, and we
put books on the map, on the radar, off the back burner, and into the
fire. We are the enchantment behind the
success of soooooo many children's books.
So let the Muggle Magic continue!
There are so many books that we have created the magic with, and so many
books to go on beyond of phenomenon Harry Potter. I doubt-and I think many of you will agree-that
we'll see another series of books come close.
But in so many ways that is freeing us to do what we do best-find the
jewels that our competition can't and put them into the right hands!
So keep up that listserv, order those ABC Best Books for
Children Catalogs, and encourage anyone you know in this wonderful universe of
ours to join ABC. Our membership is
growing and with our fearless leader Kristen McLean we are headed in new and
wonderful directions. We also have some new totally amazing board members who
will do incredible to work with to further the goals of ABC. But most of all have a great remainder of
2007! Let's make this a year to remember! I am always in total awe of all of
you, you guys so rock!
Books make everything better!

ABC members are constantly finding great ways to use
these catalogs including inserts in local papers, book fairs, school
give-aways, holiday bag stuffers, and more. This is a major benefit of store
membership in ABC, and worth many times the cost of joining.
Remember, this 20 page, full-color Best Books for Children catalog
is vetted, and not branded for the holiday so it can be used well into next
year. It is packed with the best titles from 2007, as well as backlist

ABC is Moving!

|
And we'll have sun, sun, sun....
On October 1st, ABC will be trading in frosty winters for sunnier skies
when the national office moves to sunny Miami,
FL. We're looking forward to getting to
know our new neighbors in the SIBA regional, and to hanging out with the good
people at ABC member Books & Books.
Of course, we will miss seeing our friends in NECBA, but we're
only a short plane ride away from Boston
and NYC, and we'll be back often.
Keep your eyes peeled for the new address announcement
sometime in September!

Cranking it out...
We're a victim of our own success this year, and with BEA, launching New Voices, processing all the new memberships, and balancing a maternity leave, we've gotten off-track with our newsletter editorial schedule.
Below is our schedule for the rest of the year, and from now until December we will only be placing free ads for our silver and platinum publisher members. (These members are entitled to two free ads.)
We will be re-launching our paid newsletter advertising program in the New Year, once we add some staff to pick up the extra work. We appreciate your patience as we recalibrate.

| Call for 2008 New Voices Committee |
|
You know you want to!
We've had a successful launch of this new program, and to improve it for next year, we are separating the program from the membership drive and making it stand alone. This will allow publishers of all sizes to submit projects.
We will be putting out a call to publishers for 2008 New Voices titles in September, and pulling together a committee of booksellers and/or associates to review the titles and pick 14 of the best for next year. In many cases, these projects would be on your galley pile anyway, and you can get your reading done and help ABC at the same time.
If you would like to participate in the New Voices committee, e-mail Kristen. Each committee member will be asked to report on two to three titles. The committee will meet via phone conference after Christmas. This is a great opportunity to get involved with ABC.

What a ride!
Well, it was another whirlwind BEA for ABC, with a slew of new programs and some substantial schedule changes to ABC's usual events. Many thanks to our programming partners at ABA and CBC for making the show a great success.
Thursday-Brooklyn The first big change came Thursday, when ABA and ABC held their programming not at the convention center, but at the ABA hotel in Brooklyn.
ABA's Day of Education was packed with great workshops and business seminars, and many ABC members took advantage of the opportunity to pick up new ideas to help them build their business. ABC's workshop contribution "Getting More out of Your Children's Section" ran for two well-attended sessions in the afternoon, and feedback was very strong. This was due in large part to the great ABC panelists, Elizabeth Bluemle (The Flying Pig), Carol Chittenden (Eight Cousins/Bookstream), Erin Taylor (Wonderland Books & Toys), and Emily D'Amour (Books & Books).
At mid-day Thursday, ABC held its Annual Meeting followed by its first New Voices luncheon. The luncheon featured two speakers, Melissa Marr, the thoughtful author of Wicked Lovely, and the entertaining Pseudonymous Bosch, author of The Name of this Book is Secret. Many thanks to HarperCollins and Little, Brown & Co. for making their appearance possible. The luncheon also featured the debut of our first New Voices mini-catalog. (Look for your copy in the August Children's Whitebox, and check it out!)
Afterwards, the attendees browsed a gallery of New Voices projects where they chatted, picked up galleys, and talked to publishers about their featured titles. (For more information about the New Voices program, click here.)
Friday-Javits Friday began with a bang at the Children's Breakfast at Javits, as attendees gathered to hear a stellar line-up including the UK's Children's Laureate Jacqueline Wilson, the irrepressible Mo Willems, and the august Daniel Pinkwater. MC Libba Bray kept the whole thing moving. For the first time, BEA offered two kinds of tickets to the breakfast, and attendees had their choice of table seating with refreshments, or a cheaper general admission.
When the show floor opened, ABC members were treated to a surprise at the newly re-designed ABC/ABA/CBC booth, which featured a beautiful new banner, a reading corner with a cozy red chair, and a cleaner, more professional presentation for all three organizations. For the first time the joint committee hosted cozy author readings in the booth, and we were happy to welcome Debra Frasier, Obert Skye, Christopher/Walter Dean Myers, Sharon Creech, Jacqueline Wilson, John Grandits, Jordon Sonnenblick, and Kimberly Willis Holt. Many thanks to the authors and their publishers for making these readings possible. We hope to build on the success of this next year by adding a sound system and additional slots for more authors.
Friday night featured The ABC Secret Garden Auction and Evening with Children's Booksellers in its new time slot. Returning to the Copacabana, the night got off to a glamorous start with the Auction. The caliber of artwork continues to go up every year, and the bidding was fast and furious! When guests weren't bidding they had fun mingling with everyone's favorite be-hatted feline, the Cat in the Hat, who was there to celebrate his 50th birthday. (He looked pretty good for 50!) This year's auction hit a new record of nearly $50,000. Many thanks to Anne Irish for running the event, to the many generous artists who donated their work, and to the volunteers who manned the event. The proceeds from the auction go directly to subsidizing the ABC Best Books for Children catalog, and other bookseller projects.
After the auction it was upstairs to the dinner, and time for mingling and noshing. The business of the evening began with the presentation of the 2007 E.B. White Awards. The winners of the award for Picture Books for Houndsley and Catina, James Howe and Marie-Louise Gay both spoke passionately about their love of booksellers, EB White, and the process of creating wonderful books. Watt Key, the winner of the award for Older Readers for Alabama Moon spoke with great charm about his appreciation of getting a "gold sticker" for his books when he least expected it.
After a short break for some good eating, the feature of the night began with the keynote speakers Marcus Zusak (The Book Thief/Random House), and the dynamic duo of Jane O'Connor & Robin Preiss Glasser (Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy/HarperCollins).
Marcus was riveting with his description of his experiences as a writer, and how he unexpectedly came to pen a novel where the narrator was death. In contrast was all fun and feathers when the Fancy Nancy ladies took the stage, where they proceeded to entertain the crowd with tales of girly hi-jinks, cookie rings, banana tiaras, and a wonderful slide show of young fans in fun regalia. Although the evening ran long due to a service delay by the Copa, fun was had by all.
Many thanks to Scholastic, Candlewick Press, Sleeping Bear Press, Harcourt, TokyoPop, and Listening Library for sponsoring the wine, and to HarperCollins and Random House for sponsoring the fabulous speakers. An additional thank you to Random House for bringing fun to the party by sponsoring the auction, and all the Cat in the Hat party fun.
Looking forward to BEA 2008 in L.A. the dinner will remain in its new Friday night slot, and ABC will be re-tooling the night to make it shorter and sweeter. Stay tuned for details!
Saturday-Javits
Butts were dragging on Saturday as everyone headed back to the Javits for another day on the floor, but quickly perked up with an infusion of coffee and a little Speed Dating with Children's Authors. This new program was added by the committee to replace last year's Book Buzz program, and by all measure it was a raging success. 200 lucky participants sat at tables as twenty author/publicist teams jumped from table to table for three minute get-to-know-you chats.
The powerhouse line-up included Harry Bliss and Doreen Cronin (Joanna Cotler), Libba Bray (Delacorte), Christopher Paul Curtis (Scholastic), Carmen Deedy (Peachtree), Delia Ephron (HarperTeen), Jack Gantos (Farrar, Straus & Giroux), Shannon Hale (Bloomsbury), Ellen Kushner (Charlesbridge), Carolyn Mackler (Candlewick), Peter McCarty (Henry Holt), Charise Mericle Harper (Houghton Mifflin), Jim Murphy (Clarion), Christopher Myers (Holiday House), Mary Alice Monroe (Sylvan Dell), Sara Pennypacker (Disney), Frank Portman (Delacorte), Judy Schachner (Dutton), Jordon Sonnenblick (Scholastic), Sara Varon (First Second), and Howard Whitehouse (Kids Can). This was so successful, we expect it to become a regular part of the joint BEA programming for years to come. Many thanks to all our great authors for participating!
Saturday afternoon we were happy to host the recipients of the EB White awards in the booth for a signing. The highlight was watching the authors and illustrator sign books for one another, and then the cordial conversations they had with everyone who lined up to say hi.
All in all it was a great BEA for ABC. We're beginning our planning for next year, and invite suggestions for improving our programming. E-mail us your ideas, and we'll include them when we have our meeting with the Joint Committee.
